Production Engineering Manager
Scale and drive the most precise manufacturing on the planet while playing a pivotal role in building the world’s first utility-scale quantum computer!
About us
Silicon Quantum Computing is pioneering the future of quantum technology. As the world’s first company to manufacture qubits with atomic precision, we’re delivering quantum advantage today, not decades from now.
Founded by Professor Michelle Simmons, one of the world’s leading materials scientists, SQC has achieved major breakthroughs including the first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of ARM, brings deep global experience as we scale our technology and commercial impact.
Our quantum machine learning chip, Watermelon, is already accelerating AI in ways classical systems can’t match. We’re generating significant revenue and working closely with multinational partners to solve complex problems with quantum solutions.
SQC is a fast-paced, high-accountability environment where people grow quickly and contribute meaningfully. If you’re excited by deep tech, ambitious about your career, and ready to help shape the future of computing, we’d love to hear from you.
About the role
Silicon Quantum Computing is pioneering the development of the world’s first scalable quantum processors through atomic precision manufacturing. We are seeking a Production Engineering Manager to drive, optimise, and scale the end-to-end production of quantum processors and devices, overseeing all aspects from fabrication and processing to measurement and testing.
In this pivotal role, you will establish and continuously improve a high-reliability, high-yield, high-throughput production capability that seamlessly integrates design, fabrication, metrology, and device characterisation within a closed learning loop. Your deep expertise in semiconductor manufacturing and proven ability to drive technical teams will be critical to maximising both yield and throughput in a fast-paced deep tech environment.
Role responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end fabrication, processing, and testing of quantum devices from design approval through to final characterisation.
- Manage day-to-day production line operations, ensuring high-quality outputs, robust process control, and consistent throughput.
- Partner with the Atomic Fabrication team to optimise Scanning Tunnelling Microscope-based atomic precision fabrication workflows.
- Develop, improve, and maintain processes across lithography, contact deposition, etching, wet chemistry, metrology, and related semiconductor steps.
- Implement a structured feedback loop between device performance data, process learnings, and design teams to improve manufacturability, yield, and device performance.
- Identify production bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement initiatives across all fabrication and measurement stages.
- Coach, mentor, and support multidisciplinary manufacturing and technology teams, helping to build capability and drive strong performance to achieve desired outcomes.
- Collaborate effectively with design, atomic fabrication, cryogenics, R&D, metrology, and quality teams to support product roadmaps and scale-up efforts.
- Oversee cryogenic and dilution fridge workflows used in low-temperature device testing, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
- Maintain rigorous documentation, including SOPs, run sheets, equipment logs, quality records, and process change reports.
- Ensure compliance with SQC’s quality, cleanliness, and safety standards, and contribute to scalable manufacturing governance.
- Provide clear and timely communication to senior leadership on production performance, risks, priorities, and process capability.
Your experience
Essential experience:
- Demonstrated experience in silicon semiconductor manufacturing with strong hands-on process engineering capability.
- Proven production management experience, including operating and optimising complex fabrication workflows.
- Practical experience with Scanning Tunnelling Microscope based fabrication, contact deposition, etching, and wet chemistry processes.
- Experience working with cryogenic systems and dilution fridge-based low temperature measurement environments.
- Strong track record leading multidisciplinary technical teams and improving yield, throughput, and process stability in manufacturing settings.
- Demonstrated ability to apply technical skills and deliver solutions in complex manufacturing environments.
- Proactive approach, showing strong initiative and self-motivation in driving process improvements.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety in all aspects of production and process management.
- Effective communicator and collaborator within multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and tight timelines, demonstrating resilience under pressure.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, best practice, and operational excellence in manufacturing operations.
- Experience fostering a positive and inclusive team environment as a supportive leader.
Desirable experience:
- Background in quantum device fabrication, characterisation or advanced nanofabrication environments.
- Experience scaling first of kind or R&D intensive manufacturing processes into stable production workflows.
- Familiarity with data driven process optimisation techniques, including statistical process control and yield analysis.
- Prior involvement in technology transfer, factory readiness or commissioning of new tools, processes or facilities.
The recruitment process
For roles at SQC, expect 3-4 interviews, meeting a few members of the team and focusing on your core eligibility for the role, your skills and how they align, and finally your values and how they align. We'll give you a more specific runthrough if you're successful in making it to the first interview.
As part of our obligations to our clients, we require that successful candidates submit to background checks, including a National Police Check, Right to Work checks, as well as employment and qualifications verification. We won't contact anyone until we're confident there's a fit between SQC and yourself.
How to apply
The best and simplest way is to apply directly here, rather than messaging anyone on the SQC team directly. If you have any questions that you'd like answered before committing to applying, please feel free to email us at careers@sqc.com.au.
Please note
This position may require access to export-controlled information (ECI) subject to EAR and ITAR. Final employment decision is contingent upon satisfactory completion of export control screenings and obtaining any necessary export licenses or approvals, based on nationality, citizenship, and other factors considered by applicable export control regulations.
