Cryogenic Systems Engineer
Own the integration of cutting edge cryogenic systems powering atomic scale quantum. Architect, build and commission infrastructure that performs at the edge of physics.
About us
Silicon Quantum Computing is pioneering the future of quantum technology. As the world’s first company to manufacture qubits with atomic precision, we’re delivering quantum advantage today, not decades from now.
Founded by Professor Michelle Simmons, one of the world’s leading materials scientists, SQC has achieved major breakthroughs including the first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of ARM, brings deep global experience as we scale our technology and commercial impact.
Our quantum machine learning chip, Watermelon, is already accelerating AI in ways classical systems can’t match. We’re generating significant revenue and working closely with multinational partners to solve complex problems with quantum solutions.
Silicon Quantum Computing is building quantum processors with atomic precision. None of it works without world class cryogenics. If cryogenics is your area of expertise, we'd love to have you.
About the role
As a Cryogenic Systems Engineer, you will own the systems level integration of our cryogenic infrastructure. This is not a narrow design role. You will sit at the intersection of architecture, requirements, engineering execution, and physical build. You will work closely with cryogenic and quantum engineers, RF specialists, fabrication teams, and external partners to ensure our systems are designed properly, built correctly, and delivered on time.
You will help define what “good” looks like for SQC’s cryogenic platforms, translate that into clear requirements, and then stay close to the hardware through assembly and commissioning. This is hands on, high accountability engineering in a deep tech environment where performance margins are tight and details matter.
Role responsibilities
Drive the integration of SQC’s cryogenic infrastructure across quantum, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and RF domains
Gather, define, and document system requirements, interfaces, and constraints in collaboration with other engineers
Identify and manage technical risks across design, manufacture, and operation
Contribute to the architecture of next generation cryogenic platforms aligned to quantum device needs
Support the research and development of cryogenic solutions tailored to SQC’s hardware roadmap
Work directly with cryogenic engineers during build, assembly, and test phases
Interface with internal engineering teams and external vendors to ensure timely, high quality delivery
Support validation, commissioning, and operational optimisation of cryogenic systems
Drive continuous improvement in system reliability, thermal performance, and maintainability
Your experience
Demonstrated operational experience with cryogenic systems in research or industry
Strong background in systems engineering, including requirements definition and interface management
Experience in cryogenic system design and integration, ideally across multi disciplinary environments
Practical experience with thermal modelling and performance analysis
Understanding of radio frequency systems operating at cryogenic temperatures
Proven ability to translate complex technical needs into structured, documented system requirements
Experience supporting manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of complex hardware systems
Comfortable working hands on in a lab or advanced manufacturing environment
Experience in quantum, semiconductor, advanced physics, or deep tech environments is highly regarded
The recruitment process
For roles at SQC, expect 3-4 interviews, meeting a few members of the team and focusing on your core eligibility for the role, your skills and how they align, and finally your values and how they align. We'll give you a more specific runthrough if you're successful in making it to the first interview.
As part of our obligations to our clients, we require that successful candidates submit to background checks, including a National Police Check, Right to Work checks, as well as employment and qualifications verification. We won't contact anyone until we're confident there's a fit between SQC and yourself.
How to apply
The best and simplest way is to apply directly here, rather than messaging anyone on the SQC team directly. If you have any questions that you'd like answered before committing to applying, please feel free to email us at careers@sqc.com.au.
